TreeLink
was established in 1996 to create a national urban
forestry communications hub. Today TreeLink serves as an information repository
and networking center for urban forestry professionals while providing outreach
to land agencies, academics, green industry and the general public.
USDA Forest Service: Urban and Community
Forestry Program enhances the livability of towns, communities, and cities
by improving the stewardship of urban natural resources. The Urban and
Community Forestry Program responds to these needs by maintaining, restoring,
and improving the health of urban trees, forests, greenspaces and sustainable
forest ecosystems for more than 70 million acres of Americas urban and
community forest resources.
American Forests is a world leader
in planting trees for environmental restoration, a pioneer in the science and
practice of urban forestry, and a primary communicator of the benefits of trees
and forests. American Forests (americanforests.org) is the nations oldest
nonprofit citizens conservation organization. Citizens concerned about
the waste and abuse of the nations forests founded American Forests in
1875.
International Society of Arboriculture has
served the tree care industry for over seventy years as a scientific and
educational organization. ISA was founded in 1924 when a group of forty
individuals, each engaged in a phase of tree work or research, were called
together by the Connecticut Tree Protection Examining Board to discuss shade
tree problems and their possible solutions.
Society of
Municipal Arborists Founded in 1964, the
SMA is an organization of municipal arborists and urban foresters. Our
membership also includes consultants, commercial firms and citizens who
actively practice or support some facet of municipal forestry.
National Urban and Community Forestry
Advisory Council is an organization that supports education, projects, and
groups related to urban and community forestry. We seek to establish
sustainable urban forests for all communities.
National Arbor Day
Foundation - Leadership in urban &
community forestry, tree planting & care, environmental education, nature
education for children, conferences & seminars, conservation &
agroforestry, forest stewardship, celebrating Arbor Day and Arbor Day Farm.
Sponsor of Tree City USA® program in cooperation with the USDA Forest
Service and the National Association of State Foresters, providing direction,

Arkansas Urban Forestry Council - Our

Center for Urban Forest
Research - PSW Research Station, USDA
Forest Service - Our research demonstrates new ways in which trees add value to
communities. We convert our results into real dollars and cents in order to
stimulate more investment in trees. Using our research results, we create new
methods and strategies for managing and caring for community forests to help
managers optimize the benefits and investment value of their community forest.
Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute (UFEI) was
developed by the Natural Resources Management Department faculty to address the
increasing need for improved management of the urban forests in California. The
purpose of the institute at Cal Poly is to provide a center for: applied
research, extension and technology transfer, and community service and outreach
programs assisting landowners and public agencies in improving the management
of urban forests.

Colorado Tree Coalition - Overview:

Connecticut
Connecticut Urban Forest Council,
Inc. is a statewide organization composed of representatives from
Connecticut environmental organizations, state agencies, universities, research
institutions, corporations, professional communities and citizen tree groups.
Its purpose is to provide advice, assistance, education, information and
support to urban and community forestry professionals, associated
professionals, municipal, state and corporate leaders, and volunteers.
Florida
Florida Urban Forestry Council - Since our
inception in 1990, the Florida Urban Forestry Council has served as the premier
non-profit organization in the state in issues pertaining to Urban Forestry.
Georgia
Georgia Urban Forest Council - We offer a
variety of programs and opportunities, including Basic Tree Care Workshops,
Educational Quarterly Meetings, publications such as TreeTalks and
informational brochures, the Annual Conference, an Annual Awards Program, the
Landmark and Historic Tree Register, and more.
Trees Atlanta is a non-profit citizens'
group dedicated to protecting and improving our urban environment by planting
and conserving trees. We also educate the public about the value of trees. We
are involved in tree issues in the entire metropolitan Atlanta area.

TREE (Tropical Reforestation & Ecosystems
Education) is dedicated to the conservation of and education about native
Hawaiian ecosystems. Based on Hawai'i Island, our staff and volunteers engage
children and adults in learning about the value of our native forests, by
participating in hands-on educational activities and assisting with native
habitat restoration.

Prairie
Tree Companion (PTC) Newsletter is a valuable resource, providing
information to Illinois community officials and citizens concerning Illinois'
Urban and Community Forestry Program and topics related to community tree
management. The goal of the PTC is to foster an awareness of urban forestry in
Illinois.
Quantifying the impact of
trees: The Chicago Urban Forest Climate Project - by D.J. Nowak and E.G.
McPherson. Nowak and McPherson are Research Foresters with the United States
Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Northeastern Forest Experiment
Station, Chicago. This article reports on the methodologies and initial results
of an urban forestry research project, based in Chicago, Illinois. It discusses
the interrelated urban forest ecosystem functions that are currently being
studied - climate modification, energy conservation, air quality and carbon
dioxide sequestration - and considers the cost-benefit implications of urban

Louisiana Urban Forestry
Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to recognizing, promoting,

Tree Legacy

University of Massachusetts Amherst -
Extension Landscape, Nursery, and Urban Forestry Program: to educate landscape,
nursery and turf professionals by providing programs and research-based
information on the best horticultural practices and technology for
environmental stewardship in nursery and landscape management. The Urban
Forestry Diagnostic Lab is located in room 107 Holdsworth Natural Resources
Center at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The lab evaluates woody
plant specimens for problems caused by insects and disease.

reforestation of Detroit's neighborhoods, boulevards, and parks through tree

University of
Minnesota - Urban and Community Forestry Program of the Department of
Forest Resources: The urban and community forestry curriculum prepares students
for careers in planning and managing vegetation and natural resources in or
near urban communities, and for direct involvement in resource management or

Oklahoma Urban

Friends of Trees inspires community
stewardship by bringing people in the Portland-Vancouver area together to plant
and care for city trees and urban natural areas. We plant trees along city
streets and in urban natural areas. Volunteers are always welcome to help plant

Oregon Community Trees is a
non-profit organization was established to promote urban and community forestry
in Oregon. With the support of the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), Oregon
Community Trees (OCT) provides a forum for members to share ideas, develop new

Virginia Urban

Washington: Research on Human Dimensions of Urban Greening - More than 80%
of the U.S. population lives in urbanized areas. City trees affect the lives of
millions of people. We study public and professional actions and values
concerning trees and green space in cities. Our social science research helps
local leaders better understand the many ways that the urban forest contributes
to more liveable communities. The site includes print products that help
communities create better policy for the forests where we live, work, play, and
learn.
University of Washington Botanic
Gardens - The botanic gardens include the Washington Park Arboretum, Center
for Urban Horticulture, Elisabeth C. Miller Library, Otis Hyde Herbarium and
Union Bay Natural Area, all of which retain their individual names. The UW owns
and manages the plant collections in the Washington Park Arboretum and works
cooperatively with the city and the nonprofit Arboretum Foundation there.
