Appalachian Hardwood Center
- was established in 1987 by the West Virginia
Legislature in recognition of the need for technical and research support for
the state's growing wood products industry. The Center, first and foremost,
provides industry with ready access to a staff of technical support personnel
with expertise in areas related to the wood products industry.
Center for Field
Research at Earthwatch Institute was
established in 1973 to develop research program for Earthwatch Institute by
encouraging and evaluating proposals from scholars and scientists. A private
nonprofit organization, CFR is served by an international advisory board of
respected scientific and humanities scholars. The Center's role is to create a
public offering of significant research that addresses scientific,
environmental, and public policy problems and issues.
Center for Urban Forest
Research - PSW Research Station, USDA
Forest Service - Our research demonstrates new ways in which trees add value to
communities. We convert our results into real dollars and cents in order to
stimulate more investment in trees. Using our research results, we create new
methods and strategies for managing and caring for community forests to help
managers optimize the benefits and investment value of their community forest.
Forest Nutrition
Cooperative - is a partnership committed to creating innovative
solutions to enhance forest productivity and value through the sustainable
management of site resources. The partnership is lead by faculty within the
Forestry Departments at N.C. State University and Virginia Tech who have
expertise in silviculture, ecophysiology, soils, plant community ecology,
growth and yield modeling, GIS, and remote sensing. Members include forest
industry, forest management consultants, and others interested in intensive
plantation management making the Forest Nutrition Cooperative one of the
world's largest cooperative forest research and education programs..
Fire and Environmental Reseach
Applications Team - The FERA team conducts research into fire and air
quality issues. We are part of the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest
Research Station, located in Seattle, WA and Corvallis, OR.
Great Basin Institute is an
interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental
research, education, and conservation throughout the West. The Institute
advances ecological literacy and habitat restoration through educational
outreach and direct service programs.
Human Dimensions of
Urban Forestry - Human interactions with urban natural resources are varied
and include many stakeholders. This site highlights research on public
perceptions of urban forest settings, valuation of metro nature services, and
includes policy applications.
Institute of Paper Science &
Technology - Founded in 1929, the IPST
is a privately funded 501 (c) (3) graduate research university with engineering
and scientific programs related to the pulp and paper industry. The IPST
located on the Georgia Institute of Technology campus is a graduate school,
research center, and information source for the U.S. pulp, paper, board
industry and candidates.
Pacific Northwest Ecosystem Research Consortium will
focus on development of transferable methods for evaluation of ecosystem
management alternatives to strengthen linkages between ecosystem research
activities and ecosystem management applications in the Pacific Northwest.
UrbanForest Ecosystems Institute -
This site provides information on research and activities in urban forestry.
SelecTree and urban wood as well as the CA Big trees sites are located here.
USDA Forest Products Laboratory - The long-term health of our Nation's forests depends
on sound conservation practices, including utilization. The Forest Products
Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, uses science and technology to conserve and
extend our Nation's forest resources.
Yale Program on Solid Waste
Policy research and teaching unit of the Yale School of Forestry and
Environmental Studies, the oldest school in the United States devoted to
graduate training in natural resource and environmental management. The Yale
Working Papers on Solid Waste Policy seeks to stimulate and disseminate
